Frequently asked questions

Who is Word Wise for?

Word Wise is designed for children aged 9–11 preparing for the UK 11+ exam — including grammar school entrance, independent school assessments, CEM tests, and GL Assessment papers. The vocabulary, definitions, and example sentences have all been tailored for this audience.

When should my child start using Word Wise?

We recommend starting in Year 4 or early Year 5 — ideally a year or more before the exam. Vocabulary is learned best through short daily exposure over months, not last-minute cramming. Starting early means your child arrives at the exam confident and prepared.

Which 11+ exams does Word Wise prepare children for?

Word Wise focuses on vocabulary skills relevant across all major UK 11+ exam formats, including grammar school entrance exams, independent school assessments, CEM tests, and GL Assessment papers. While exam papers vary by region and school, vocabulary depth and breadth is a core requirement across them all.

Is Word Wise enough on its own for 11+ preparation?

Word Wise focuses specifically on vocabulary, which is one important component of 11+ preparation. We recommend it as part of a broader study plan that also covers verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, mathematics, and English comprehension. It's a daily habit-builder, not a complete revision course.

Is Word Wise free?

Yes — Word Wise is completely free to download and use. There are no advertisements, no in-app purchases, and no subscriptions.

Does Word Wise need an internet connection?

No. Word Wise is fully offline. Once installed, your child can use it anywhere — on a long car journey, on holiday, or anywhere without WiFi.

Do I need to create an account?

No accounts, no sign-up, no email required. Just download and start learning. All progress is stored locally on the device.

What about my child's privacy?

Word Wise does not collect, store, or share any personal data. Everything stays on the device. We do not use third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking. You can read the full privacy policy here.

How does the streak system work?

Each day your child completes a lesson, their streak grows by one. If they miss a day, a "Streak Freeze" can save the streak — these are earned through regular play. The goal is to encourage daily practice without making missed days feel discouraging.

My child lost their progress / streak — can it be restored?

Because all data is stored locally on the device for privacy reasons, progress cannot be recovered if the app is deleted or the device is reset. We are exploring optional iCloud backup for a future version. If something has gone wrong, please email us and we will do our best to help.

How do I switch the app to a different language?

Word Wise currently supports English vocabulary learning. We may add additional languages in future updates.

How long should my child use Word Wise each day?

Word Wise is designed around short 5-minute daily sessions. Research shows that brief, regular practice builds vocabulary far better than long cramming sessions — and this is especially true for exam preparation. We recommend setting a consistent time each day, such as after school or just before bedtime, well before the 11+ exam date.

My child is older or younger than 9–11 — can they still use it?

The app is tailored for ages 9–11 preparing for the 11+ exam. Younger children (Year 3) may find the vocabulary stretching but useful. Older children (Year 7+) may still benefit if they want to broaden their vocabulary, although the app's content and difficulty are pitched specifically at the 11+ level.

I have a feature suggestion or feedback — where do I send it?

We would love to hear it. Email us at contact@idabyte.co.uk. Word Wise is built by a small team and we genuinely read and consider every suggestion.

Is Word Wise available for Android?

Word Wise is currently iOS only. We may consider an Android version in the future based on demand.

How do I report a bug?

Email contact@idabyte.co.uk with a description of what went wrong, the steps that led to it, and your device and iOS version. Screenshots are very helpful.

How do I delete the app and all its data?

Press and hold the Word Wise icon on your home screen, then tap "Remove App" → "Delete App". Because all data is stored locally on the device, this also removes all of your child's progress, streaks, and achievements.
